Chaos & Culture Episode 2: Everything's for Sale, or Is It? feat. Risikat "Kat" O

People around the world use cultural expression to share their creativity and traditions, sometimes making money in the process. Others see cultural expressions as nothing more than a commodity. We live in a world where everyone and everything is for sale, including creole words referencing what was once a horrific practice during slavery and is now known as an outdoor celebration breaking dawn. What I'm speaking of is "J'Ouvert", the trademark of the word by Michael B. Jordan and business partner Scott Williams, and the rum brand they've launched now bearing the term. Many natives of Trinidad and Tobago and people from other Caribbean islands are angry and want answers.

You know I have thoughts on the matter. To help me work through this, I've brought in cultural architect and professor Risikat "Kat" Okedeyi to discuss the damage commodifying culture without respect for its history and legacy can cause. We'll also talk about whether or not people who hold their cultural expressions in high regard should begin protecting these investments through copyrights and trademarks.
