What does it mean to tell your own story in your own voice? In this episode of The Good Road, Earl Bridges and Craig Martin travel to Nairobi, Kenya, uncovering how storytelling empowers youth in underprivileged communities to shape their futures.
They meet Mark Kamau, a celebrated technologist and designer recently featured in National Geographic. Raised in the Matheri Slum, Mark escaped the grip of poverty and crime through unexpected opportunities. But he hasn’t left his community behind—Mark mentors local youth, inspiring them to rewrite their own stories and build brighter futures.
Earl and Craig also meet Ken Oloo, co-founder of Filamujuani, an organization that trains young people from the slums to become professionals in Kenya’s TV and film industry. Ken, who also grew up in the slums, serves as a role model for the next generation, showing what’s possible through storytelling and determination.
One of Filamujuani’s success stories is Ijawa Obeid, Assistant Director of the popular East African comedy One in a Million. Ijawa shares her life in the Kibera slums, introducing the hosts to her adopted son, whom she rescued from life on the streets. Through Ken’s program, Ijawa and many others have transformed their lives and now help amplify the voices of their communities.
From the slums of Nairobi to the bright lights of television, The Good Road reveals how storytelling transcends borders and barriers, giving people the tools to rise above their circumstances and inspire others.
The Good Road takes viewers on a journey to explore the messy, complex, and inspiring world of global charity. Hosted by philanthropy veterans and best friends Earl Bridges and Craig Martin, the series shines a light on the people doing good—from border camps to anti-poaching efforts. Whether halfway across the world or in our own backyards, these stories show how acts of kindness can change lives.
