Mark Kamau grew up in the Matheri Slum in Nairobi but through a surprising series of events, he was able to escape the crime and poverty surrounding him and build a new life. But Mark wasn’t content with keeping his new life for himself, he dreams of everyone in Matheri getting the same opportunities he had.This story is a model for the next generation to rise above their circumstances.
Summary:Craig and Earl are back in this episode with the BRCK team. Except, this time theyexplore new characters in BRCK’s home base. The team follows BRCK’s Director of UXMark Kamau (featured in National Geographic Magazine) as he visits his old friends in the Matheri slum. The crew also hangs out on the set of the East African TV show One in a Million which is Africa’s version of The Beverly Hillbillies. On set, Executive Producer Ken Oloo introduces the team to Assistant Director Ijawa Obeid. Ijawa invites the crew to her home in the Kibera slum where the team gets introduced to her young son who she rescued from a trash heap after he was dumped in a paper bag by his mother. The team also visits a high end leather manufacturer called Sandstorm that intentionally makes products for Kenyans by Kenyans. They hire and train employees from the slums. But,Nairobi isn’t only slums, it is modern with all kinds of art and culture. The Good Road crew, as always, finds beer and in one of the hippest clubs on the continent called The Alchemist Bar. Hanging out with the owner Peng Cheng, Earl, Craig and the crew learn alittle something about Nairobi’s art community.
