Sudan, once a hidden gem for adventurous travelers, is now shrouded in conflict. This video takes a look back at its pre-war treasures, exploring ancient ruins, vibrant markets, and breathtaking landscapes that are waiting to be rediscovered. You'll learn about the history and culture of this fascinating country and its potential for future tourism.

In January 2023 we visited Sudan, officially the Republic of the Sudan. It is a country in Northeast Africa which borders the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west, Libya to the northwest, Egypt to the north, the Red Sea to the east, Eritrea and Ethiopia to the southeast, and South Sudan to the south. Sudan has a population of 50 million people and occupies 1,886,068 square kilometres (728,215 square miles), making it Africa's third-largest country by area and the third-largest by area in the Arab League.

On 15 April 2023, conflicts erupted into a civil war starting with the battles in the streets of Khartoum between the army and the RSF – with troops, tanks and planes. By the third day, 400 people had been reported killed and at least 3,500 injured, according to the United Nations. Among the dead were three workers from the World Food Programme, triggering a suspension of the organization's work in Sudan, despite ongoing hunger afflicting much of the country.

It was going to be the next best adventure travel destination. And then war broke out.

Such a shame. What a beautiful country.
